There have been attempts to paint Bernie Sanders as the Democratic Party’s Donald Trump. But the truth is that Sanders is more like the anti-Trump.

Where Trump has never held elected office, Sanders is one of the longest-serving members of Congress; where Trump calls himself a Republican but seems to loathe his party, Sanders calls himself an independent socialist but acts like a loyal Democrat; where Trump delights in attacking his fellow candidates, Sanders refuses to go negative; where Trump heightens the contrasts between him and his critics, Sanders has been unveiling new policies to quell doubts from Black Lives Matter activists; where Trump is limiting the Republican Party’s ability to reach beyond its base and win minority voters, Sanders is trying to expand the Democratic Party’s base among the white working class and evangelicals; where Trump is a billionaire attempting to take over American politics, Sanders is a congressman of unusually modest means trying to stop billionaires from taking over American politics.

A presidential candidate floated the idea of using troops to stop legal abortion, and the media all but ignored it.

(In fact, Debbie Wasserman Schultz was the only person to mention Mike Huckabee’s remarks on the Sunday shows.)

In the bizarro world where Mike Huckabee has a chance of winning, I’m terrified.

My boy Bernie

lavendersucculents

I’m surprised to see a white man make this kind of comment.

isseymiyucky

^^ it’s called having a political strategist. He went from “all lives matter ” to this … he has a good pick up team and will lean as deep left as he can to win the election by the hands of millennials

schmaniel

Martin O'Malley is the one who said “All lives matter”.

Bernie Sanders has been fighting for Civil Rights for 50 years. And dude identifies as a Socialist, he’s not pretending to lean left for votes.

nightmaresofsocrates

…..Bernie was arrested in 1962 for protesting segregation in school and putting up flyers detailing police brutality against black people in America.

Bernie Sanders marched in Washington in support of MLK and attended his I Have A Dream speech.

Sanders has played huge roles in organizing actions protesting discriminatory actions by the U.S. government against minorities since the sixties, many times being the only politician in his circle to even mention these causes, let alone support them.

Get outta here. Only typing this out on the off chance someone out there believes it to be the contrary and can read this and be like, “oh, nice.”

Hey remember when Bernie Sanders said women fantasize about rape?

Hey remember when Hillary Clinton defended a rapist?

Hey.

What’s that “rape culture” you guys said you were against?

muchtoocynical

for anyone who sees this, some clarification

sanders’ quote is from a satirical 1972 essay he wrote that examined sexual dynamics between men and women, and he used such extreme language (he also said men prefer tied up women) to help more clearly draw contrasts between male and female sexuality

and “defended” here means “was legally obliged to defend her client in a court of law because that’s her duty as a public defender” even though she did request to be taken off that case in particular way back in 1975

although I know a fair portion of tumblr has already written off Hillary due to, y'know, doing her job and it’s only a matter of time before sanders’ essay gets passed around and taken out of context too

regardless I’d bet that sanders and Clinton have much more pro-women voting stances than literally any of the 18 republican candidates (trump and Carson notwithstanding) despite these out-of-context instances that occurred 40 years ago

http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2015/5/19/bernie-sanders-unveils-plan-for-tuition-free-public-colleges.html

The federal funding for Sanders’s proposal would come from a tax on financial transactions. Stock trades, bonds, and derivative trading would be taxed at rates of 0.5 percent, 0.1 percent, and 0.005 percent, respectively. Supporters of the financial transaction tax, which they call the “Robin Hood tax,” say it is not only a progressive way to raise revenue but would also discourage dangerous levels of Wall Street speculation.

http://money.cnn.com/2015/05/20/news/bernie-sanders-free-college/

His bill, called The College for All Act, would lower interest rates on federal student loans, give graduates a chance to refinance existing loans at lower rates, and stop the government from making profits on student loans.

To fund the legislation by generating up to $300 billion a year, Sanders proposes instituting a 0.5% tax on trades of stocks and 0.1% tax on bonds and an even smaller fee on so-called derivatives, such as stock options and futures contracts.

Here’s a little video with a discussion, the source they link to is the one right above this.

“It is time for us to end private, for-profit participation in delivering basic coverage. It is time for the United States to provide a Medicare-for-all single-payer health coverage program,“ Sanders said.

While making the case for a single-payer system nationwide, Sanders applauded his home state of Vermont for its progress toward developing its own single-payer system which could become a model for the nation.

The Program amends the tax code to create the American Health Security Trust Fund and appropriates to the Fund specified tax revenues, current health program receipts, and tax credits and subsidies under the Affordable Care Act. While the final structure of the financing component is still under consideration and is subject to change, the tax revenues in the draft include a new health care income tax, an employer payroll tax, a surcharge on high income individuals, and a tax on securities transactions.

http://www.sanders.senate.gov/download/american-health-security-act-of-2013?inline=file

A link to the actual healthcare bill.

https://www.congress.gov/bill/113th-congress/house-bill/1200

A link to a summary of the bill. You’ll notice that it says that it eliminates medicare, medicaid and several other benefits, but that doesn’t matter because it gives those benefits right back under a different name to ALL Americans. Oh, and look at that:

“Amends the Internal Revenue Code to impose on individuals: (1) a health care income tax, and (2) an income tax surcharge on amounts of modified adjusted gross income exceeding $1 million. Imposes an excise tax on securities transactions and allows an income tax credit for such taxes.”

So it pays for itself with slightly higher taxes on corporations and the very wealthy. So does the college bill. Yes, they’ll bitch and moan about how it’s going to kill the economy if rich people have to pay one cent more in taxes, but it won’t. If this bill passes they’ll make it sound like it’s the end of the world, but then they’ll be used to it in less than 10 years and it will not have affected the economy in any negative way. They do this every time there’s an increase in taxes. It fucking happened when medicare was introduced. When the minimum wage was increased. When the minimum wage was INTRODUCED. When we got rid of slavery. When we introduced child labor laws. Every restriction and new tax is the “end of business in America,” except that it never is.

So obviously, it’s not magical fairy dust free, it’s an increase in taxes free, but you know what I’m okay with? Paying higher taxes so that I don’t have to pay for college or health insurance. Because both of those cost a TON in the short and long term and financially ruin Americans who need to pay for them but can’t. You know what almost never financially ruins people as long as they actually pay them? Taxes.

tl;dr, Bernie Sanders does have a plan to pay for providing college and healthcare for all, and it’s sustainable.

zenkitty714

Bernie Sanders has an ACTUAL WORKABLE PLAN to pay for his proposals to provide free college education and free healthcare to everyone, and it will work, despite that Conservatives will lose their minds over how it will destroy America.

winneganfake

Personally, I call that a side benefit of the Sanders Plan.

In 180 Seconds You Will Be Voting For Bernie Sanders

rosesharonn

We need to give this man the media attention he deserves because he does not have the funds that the other potential candidates have.

shitigiveafuckabout

I’m over it with elected officials being backed by big money and using our votes to get the top 1% more money. Bernie has said NO to a SuperPAC and to billionaire funding, so we need to throw our votes behind him and show THE ENTIRE WORLD, including our own corporations and financial institutions that AMERICA IS NOT FOR SALE!!!!

wardarose

This is what I meant when I said we don’t have to settle, we must support the best options so they have a chance to compete. Right now, Bernie Sanders is that option.

sanders4prez

Never settle.
